肖像 / Portraits— After Portraits
Shimpei Yoshida, Akihiro Higuchi, Nobuyuki Osaki, Hiroshi Takeda
From February 4 to 28,
we present the group exhibition 肖像 / Portraits— After Portraits.
The portrait is one of the most immediate ways of representing a human being,
yet it can never fully capture a person.
Faces and figures overlap with memory, projection, and fiction,
appearing as images that are always incomplete and shifting.
This exhibition brings together different approaches to the portrait
and quietly asks what becomes visible after the portrait—
beyond likeness, representation, and identification.
On view are works by
Shimpei Yoshida, including a large-scale painting shown in Mannheim last year;
video works by Nobuyuki Osaki, in which images continuously transform;
wood sculptures by Akihiro Higuchi, presenting idealized figures that recall girls’ manga of the 1970s;
and works by Hiroshi Takeda, depicting fictional portraits.
Rather than offering a definition of the portrait,
the exhibition opens a space for multiple ways of seeing
and reflecting on human presence.
