"On August 20th 1974, a stone tablet inscribed with a haiku was set atop Mt. Fuji. "On August 20th 1974, a stone tablet inscribed with a haiku was set atop Mt. Fuji. This was my father’s reckless project, to fulfil the dream of my grandfather who was a haiku poet...to bring a stone tablet to Kengamine next to the observatory on Mt. Shingo Yoshida is known to the gallery and its guests from numerous exhibitions. His works take us on his world travels from Chile to Sweden. From places that tell him and us of the unseen and unheard. This time around, however, Yoshida's journey has taken him back home, as the son and grandson of parents and grandparents. A journey after the "lost" stone, a memorial stone. On it is immortalised his grandfather's name, one of a total of three haiku students of the famous haiku poet Yamaguchi Seishi. Its final location is Mount Fuji, Japan's holiest mountain. Shingo's homecoming is special. It leads not only back to his own family, but also to his extended native land. Through his return, he learns about the pitfalls of bureaucracy that stand in the way of setting up the stone, while his father surprises him with unorthodox tactics to clip the wings of the bureaucratic monster. Finally, Yoshida learned an important on his journey after the stone: that the value of art always increases when the danger of preventing it increases.
