From what memories and dreams do we come and where are we going? Nobuyuki Osaki explores these kinds of questions, drawing on the private photographs and memories of others. The boundaries between personal and collective experience literally dissolve in the artist's video and photographic works, for once the portraits of his models are painted with acrylic on glass, they simultaneously dissolve again in contact with water. The dissolution of clear contours allows the experience of others to be understood as an experience of the self; what remains is a collective "we".
Real urban landscapes inspire the three-dimensional and puzzle-like modular sculptures of artist Toshifumi Hirose. Circling the colorful structures reveals a strange balance between taking shape and dissolving, subverting our usual visual experiences. Hirose's sculptures embody models of utopia without exuberant promise, but with an openness that allows the viewer to experience in them a place that is at once their own and collective.
