      Playing is only something for children and later rather unproductive. But is that true? Not at all, because games inspire creative thinking and lead to new ideas and solutions. These often overlooked benefits of playing are the subject of the current group show Now, it's time to play at the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo to which Yoshiaki Kaihatsu was invited to participate. With his Juke no kabe (Wall of exams) - built from cabinets and chests of drawers typical in Japan and Korea - Kaihatsu points in a playful and admonishing way to the psychological stress of young students in the face of the many, future-oriented ... read more

      When Yoshiaki Kaihatsu pays tribute to the giants of art history like Daniel Buren, Jackson Pollock or Piet Mondrian in absurdly huge underpants, socks and undershirts, even the most conservative museum visitors will not be able to refrain from smiling. The sense of humor with which Kaihatsu skilfully tackles the mechanisms of the art world such as fame, ego, rivalries or macho posturing is just too well-done. In his work-in-progress work Picasso Factory (147801 Series), which is also on display, Kaihatsu even takes on the most well-known of all artists. The self-imposed goal is to outperform Picasso in terms of productivity by just one work.
