RIKUO UEDA RECEIVES THE HANS THEO RICHTER PRIZE 2023 FOR DRAWING AND GRAPHICS

15.06.2023

The Saxon Academy of Arts awards the Hans Theo Richter Prize for Drawing and Printmaking to the Japanese artist Rikuo Ueda. The Hans Theo Richter Prize is awarded in cooperation with the Hildegard and Hans Theo Richter Foundation and the Kupferstich-Kabinett der Staatlichen Kunstsammlungen Dresden.

Even in Rikuo Ueda's earliest works, wind was the central element. In his wind drawings and wind etchings, the movement of the wind is transferred to paper using simple but sophisticated devices. His imagery is not strictly conceptual, but exudes something incredibly poetic. Rikuo Ueda, who often adds short essays to his works, has something of a writer about him, just like the Czech artist, poet and winner of the same prize in 1999, Jiří Kolař. Ueda's works magically attract the viewer by recording the messages of the wind as lines on the picture carrier - whereby care is taken to "nevertheless preserve the inimitability of chance", says Max Uhlig about Ueda's works.

The public presentation of the prize to the artist, who was born in Osaka in 1950, is planned for fall 2023 and will be combined with an exhibition and an event in collaboration with the Kupferstich-Kabinett Dresden.
