20095 Hamburg

For around two decades, Shingo Yoshida (*1974, Tokyo, Japan) has been constantly traveling the globe. His travels often take him to untouched areas and landscapes inhabited by traditional cultures. With his film and photo camera, he searches and aims to record the legends and myths of these places. The search for the unknown is always also a search for the self.

In the three-day special exhibition, a large-scale, kaleidoscopic wall installation of his photographs will encourage visitors to look for unexpected connections between otherwise independent images. In addition, the film TE GUETTE, created in 2023 in the La Roya Valley in France, will celebrate its German premiere as a full-length projection. Last but not least, for the first time, visitors will have the opportunity to hold and flip through all of Yoshida's artist books produced to date and thus directly engage with the complex work by the Japanese film and photo artist.

* Parallel to the opening on Friday, 28.06.2024, our neighboring galleries are showing the following exhibitions: Galerie Nanna Preußners: "Constance Vogt - Drawings and Objects" // Galerie Hengevoss-Dürkopp: "Summer Show - Dirk Brömmel, Kyung-Hwa Choi-Ahoi, Roland Helmus, Thomas Kälberloh, Barbara Petzold Keiyona C. 2024 marks the 35th anniversary of the city partnership between Hamburg and Osaka. On this occasion, we are delighted to present the group exhibition “Mit allen Wassern gewaschen - すべては水であらわれる”, in which the works of seven outstanding Japanese and German artists will be shown together for the first time. The bringing together of contemporary artistic positions from both twin cities not only reflects the friendly relationship between the two cosmopolitan port metropolises, but also supports the cultural exchange that has been increasingly promoted since 1989. Those who have been washed in all waters are proverbially clever, experienced and, admittedly, a little cunning. Creative work requires all of these qualities, as artists are often faced with challenges that demand imaginative solutions. The current exhibition is therefore also to be understood as an intercultural dialog platform that invites its visitors to actively participate in the contemporary art discourse.

The three Hamburg-based artists Josephin Böttger, Mariella Mosler and Oliver Ross will afterwards take part in the ART OSAKA 2024 (Expanded Section, location: kagoo) from July 18-22, 2024, where they will present an exciting new selection of works on an area of around 100m2. In this way, the artists are once again making a decisive contribution to promoting cultural dialog in Japan.

"Shiwasu" in Japan refers to a time when everyone is busy and hectic because the end of the year is approaching. It is said to be such a busy month that even the priests feel like they have to run around instead of quietly reading sutras.

How about a concentrated one-day exhibition where you can meet new people and great art, get inspired and prepare for the new year in a leisurely way?

In addition to works by artists from the gallery (Chisei Kobayashi, Taiyoh Mori, Toshifumi Hirose, Rikuo Ueda, Shingo Yoshida and Yuki Yamamoto), there will also be works by artist friends and product designers living in Hamburg Chika Aruga, Chie Mori, Oribon and Nobuko Watabiki.

Traditional craftsmanship meets 1970s Japanese pop nostalgia. Akihiro Higuchi's upcoming solo exhibition features sculptures carved from wood with direct reference to iconic characters from the so-called girl comics (shōjo manga) of the seventies. For Higuchi, these are an expression of his youth and the feelings associated with it. With his sculptures, the artist now seeks to remind viewers of the longings and world views of his own childhood.

In his upcoming solo exhibition, Yoshiaki Kaihatsu remains true to his humorous yet clearly political stance by focusing on several social injustices of our time: In his series "Seven Deadly Sins: Lucky 7", for example, the artist addresses the ongoing racism in the U.S. and the unlawful use of force by the police there by means of embroidered uniforms. In yet other works, such as the beards created from female hair, the artist literally turns the supposed ideals of masculinity upside down.

Next Monday, March 9th, 2020 from 1-9 p.m., we are celebrating 20 years of 3/9 Art Day!

To celebrate a twentieth anniversary, we are organizing a one-day art event - in cooperation with Yoshiaki Kaihatsu - to which you are invited to participate directly. For 39 Euros, the artist creates a digital drawing (including a digital signature) based on your portrait. For this we take a photo of you on site, send the photo to Japan and print out the finished work. This happens live between 2-4 p.m. This work can be taken home the same day. All of the portraits that Kaihatsu will receive later will be completed in the following days. (Interested parties who cannot appear in person, please contact us by email or phone.)

* The day for the appreciation of contemporary art, which was founded by Yoshiaki Kaihatsu in 2000, takes place internationally every year and brings current artistic efforts into public awareness with a wide variety of events. Calendar data is often shortened to the two essential numbers (month / day) in everyday Japanese language. March 3rd - 3/9 - is pronounced san kyû and is similar to the English words "Thank You". This coincidence explains the selection of that date for the "Thank You Art Day".

“Tiger slippers or feather hats, the silhouette of an alpine procession or a porcelain cat: designers have always used animal materials and forms to create artistic worlds of images and objects. Their handmade or industrial objects, graphics and photographic series tell stories of how we approach animals and the roles they play — from the dreaded wild animal through the farm animal to the beloved domestic pet. Sometimes even mythical creatures may be found and enrich the creative diversity of designs. The exhibition explores animals on the human body, in living areas, and on the plate and addresses current themes like species extinction or veganism. A sanctuary and a parcours invite young animal lovers to explore and design for themselves.” (Source: https://museum-gestaltung.ch/en/ausstellung/energie-animale/)

The Loko Gallery in Tokyo is currently dedicating a solo exhibition to Shingo Yoshida entitled The Summit. In this latest work, Shingo Yoshida reconstructs a remarkable part of her own family history; the erection of a stone monument with haiku inscriptions by famous poets on the top of Mount Fuji in 1974. Yoshida's father and grandfather were part of this (artistic) project. The stone still stands on Mount Fuji today, but it is interesting that it is rarely discovered by the approximately 300,000 mountain climbers. Individually, they deal with questions such as the role of the self in the creative process (Yumi Nakata), the status of painting in the age of Facebook and Instagram (Taishi Urakawa), the relativity of things and its artistic representation (Yuki Yamamoto) as well as a re-evaluation of the possibilities of visual signs (Chisei Kobayashi). In the works by Japanese painter Miyuki Tsugami (born 1973 in Tokyo, grew up in Osaka, lives and works in Kamakura) past, present and future regularly merge into painterly timescapes. The direct experience of a place and its history is always the basis of her work. Capturing urban and landscape sceneries as an expression of time is the declared aim of the artist. For this Tsugami makes sketches, to which she likes to add notes and thoughts on light conditions or even historical and archaeological information. In these small-scale preparatory works, she already begins to reduce what she sees to its essentials. On her canvases, which are produced later in the studio, contours dissolve much or less completely and give space for a sensory filled color landscape. In the abstraction of form Tsugami finds a way of visualizing time. Because the artist knows: everything is in motion, in sync with the flow of time. The preliminary work for View - Life and Waterways brought Tsugami for the first time to Hamburg from late October to early November 2018, where she made numerous sketches in the city and port area. Her sketches for Osaka, on the other hand, were made in late 2015 and early 2016, in the area around the central wholesale market by the Aji River near her parents' home. The trend is clear: Away with style, away with anything handmade - instead, intensive research and artistic data. The contemporary art of the West needs to be primarily conceptual but not well crafted anymore. Hence, the works have been hiding for some time behind the unattractive and the problematic concept of the documentary. Today's art travels lighter than it used to. It has rid itself from the burden of beauty from of the last centuries. Has art lost its sensuality?

No must be the answer at the sight of the works exhibited in this group exhibition entitled small is beautiful, all of which captivate with their unmistakable beauty: Here you find fine lacquer painting or silver dust carefully applied to insect wings and shiny black chitinous exoskeletons as well as resolutely executed brush strokes in acrylic paint on canvas or monumental landscape photography. Misjudging beauty as evidence of a missing conceptual foundation or political message is a serious but frequently made mistake. All participating artists share a sincere respect for nature, whose manifold existence is known to be increasingly endangered by humans. Admittedly, they do not always see this political level at first glance. But this is precisely the reason why the work escapes current fashions that cause art to try to force itself into the guise of the mass media, inevitably forfeiting its genuine qualities.

With sensitivity and elegance that has become rare, these artists ask: What is the place for nature in view of the rapidly advancing technical progress? That this concern is by no means a phenomenon of the 21st century show artists such as William Morris (1834-1896) - co-founder of the Arts and Crafts Movement - or the British economist E.F. Schumacher (1911-1977), whose ideas were first published in the 1973 Small is beautiful. A full study of economics as if people mattered. In essence, both Morris and Schumacher argue for a rebalancing of economic and human needs. Schumacher's thoughts on the relevance of environmental protection as well as the problems of atomic energy and the growing scarcity of resources still have relevance today. Their approaches are reminiscent of a common Japanese proverb, which, in free translation, means "Do not forget your initial modesty." This aphorism goes to Zeami Motokiyo (1363-1443), an important playwright of Nô-theater during the Muromachi period (1336-1573). The appeal to never forget one's modesty and curiosity is key to these words. Where is our modesty when it comes to the dire condition of our planet?

Modern man does not experience himself as a part of nature but as an outside force destined to dominate and conquer it. He even talks of a battle with nature, forgetting that, if he won the battle, he would find himself on the losing side. (Schumacher, 1973)

small is beautiful - neither the book nor the exhibition - is not a critique of progress per se. It is a reminder to all of us not to lose our modesty. We do not live alone on this earth, but share it with countless larger and especially smaller creatures. It is up to us to recognize that we are still part of the natural whole today. But it seems as if we have already forgotten the importance of this harmony with nature. We lose the sense of the basic. To look again at the little wonders of nature right in front of us would be a first step in the right direction.... show less

On Friday, July 13, 2018, there will be an artist talk between Yoshida Shingo and Dr. Wolf Jahn. The conversation coincides with the last day of the current solo exhibition Hidden Places. We hope that this will be a kind of intermediate conclusion as well as an outlook on future developments in the artist's oeuvre. We ask for registration by e-mail - please click here.

Information about the artist:
For the artist Shingo Yoshida (born 1974), born and raised in the urban jungle of Tokyo, places in the midst of untouched nature have an irresistible attraction. As a result, the artist regularly visits remote places around the globe, such as the humid Amazon rainforest or the bitterly cold ice deserts of Siberia. In these places people's lives - to a certain extent - are still determined today by nature as well as by myths and popular beliefs. Yoshida, who likes to refer to himself as superstitious, is fascinated by this relationship between humans and their natural environment. With the help of his video and photo camera, he documents the topographical as well as cultural characteristics of each region - always intuitively and with much respect for his subjects. The different, yet unknown cultural and natural spaces provide Yoshida with a means of self-reflection.... show less

1968 marks a turning point in the history of Japanese photography. This year, Nakahira Takuma (1938-2015), together with a small group of young intellectuals and photographers from within the heart of Tokyo, published the first issue of the coterie magazine Provoke. Their stated goal was to create a new photography that would exist independently from common linguistic codes and in this way provoke completely new concepts of thought. Provoke eventually appeared in only four issues between 1968 and 1970. The striking imagery of predominantly grainy, blurry and out-of-focus black-and-white photography (better known under the Japanese term are-bure-boke) and the theoretical foundation of the magazine are nevertheless today more than ever inspiration for artists around the world.
The main subject of the talk will be Nakahira Takuma's photographic contribution to Provoke. It is the most radical as well as consistent attempt at putting the medium of photography to its inherent limits. At the center of the analysis is the complex and often counterintuitive relationship between theory and practice.

About the speaker:
Jan-Frederik Rust is an art historian specializing in the history and theory of photography. He studied art history, media studies and Japanese in Marburg, Tokyo and Berlin. In his master's thesis he examined the so-called are-bure-boke aesthetics, which is particularly associated with the publication of the photo magazine Provoke (1968-1970). Since 2013, he has published texts on Japanese photobooks and related topics on his website Faraway Eyes. He is currently working on his dissertation at the Bauhaus University Weimar.

This year we would like to invite you to celebrate with us the annually "3/9 - Thank You Art Day" on Friday, March 9, 2018 at 7pm. Launched in 2000 by our artist Yoshiaki Kaihatsu, this Day of Appreciation of Contemporary Art takes place on an international level every year and brings the current art scene even more clearly into the public consciousness with a variety of events. In Japanese dates are often reduced to the two most important numbers (month/day). The 3rd of March - 3/9 - is pronounced as san kyû which sounds similar to the English words "Thank You". From this coincidence, the selection of that particular date for the "Thank You Art Day" can be explained.

For the 18th anniversary, the art historian and staff member, Jan-Frederik Rust, will give a lecture entitled "Japanese Photography after 1945 - An Introduction". We look forward to an interested audience.
